Leon Ward, Greater St. Paul Local No. 25
On February 11, 2011, a Hair Massacure, organized by Deana Gosselin and St. Paul Local teachers at Ashmont Elementary School, was held for students and the community. The goal was to raise awareness and funds in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, in their fight against childhood cancer.
In a report for the school newsletter, Grade 6 students Dayna Jackson-Quinney and Kierra Shirt wrote:
[The Hair Massacure] occurred in the last two periods of the day in the gym. All of the grades from ECS to Grade 6 went to the gym to watch the people shave or pink their hair. Some of the students and staff pinked their hair, shaved their heads, or donated their hair. There were seven members of the local RCMP that did the same as some students and staff.
Altogether the school raised $8,400. The class that raised the most money was Ms. Gosselin’s 2A class. They raised $1,174! This event was held to help kids that have cancer all over the country.
In all, there were 80 people that pinked their hair. There were also six kids that donated their hair to the Hair Massacure. Their hair will be used to make wigs for those people who have lost their hair because of their cancer treatment.
The staff and students from Ashmont Elementary would like to thank the RCMP and community members who helped to make this fundraiser a success. By working together, we made a real difference!
It is not the local but, rather, Deana Gosselin and the teachers, staff and students at Ashmont Elementary who deserve applause for this magnificent effort. Way to go, folks!
